Working as a part-time VA is the perfect career choice to fit around Krystal’s young family
Find out how Krystal got started
I remember when Krystal first reached out to me via an Instagram DM.
She was trying to decide whether to join the next round of my VA Course.
We chatted about whether the course was the right fit for her because Krystal was already working with clients at this stage and she wanted to make sure she was going to be learning the right skills and tools before signing up.
Luckily I can say that she did say ‘yes’ and signed up to my VA Course in June 2020.
She exceeded all expectations of herself and quickly became fully booked with clients.
Krystal is in the US and I’m in Perth Western Australia, opposite sides of the world! I can honestly say that I feel so lucky to have met Krystal and have gotten to know her quite well throughout her time in the course. As well as continuing to support her after the course.
I’m so proud of everything she has achieved.

Where did you work before you became a VA?
I was an oral surgeon’s surgical assistant for 5 years before I started my VA journey.
When did you first hear about Virtual Assistants or become aware they even existed?
I had a 6 month old and had a huge desire to continue stay home to raise him but also have a career that provided income to help with the finances for our family. I posted in a local moms Facebook group, and a very kind woman in that group directed me to a site called UpWork. That’s where I landed my first VA job.

What made you want to become a VA?
I had the desire to work remote a couple years before I had my first child. After my son was born, I knew it’s where God wanted me. I quickly realised after landing my first client with a great business that I really enjoyed being a VA. I was good at what I was doing for the client and the career possibilities were so great.
Did you leave your job or start working as a VA on the side?
I left my full time job, determined to be home with my son while growing a remote career.
What or who helped you get started as a VA?
God led me to this chapter, my supportive husband and a community of people I didn’t even know that supported me.
Who was your first client and how did you get them?
My first client’s name is Jason. He is a director for N2 publishing. I was hired by him through the Upwork site. He introduced me to two other clients in his company that needed a VA. I still work with one of those clients today.
What’s the best thing about being a VA?
The flexibility it gives me for my family, the business relationships I’m building, and that I get to support other business owners.
What’s the hardest thing about being a VA?
It’s easy to become a perfectionist in this industry.
What types of things have you had to learn to become a VA?
I was not confident in the technology department before I started this chapter of my life, becoming a VA changed that completely. Mindset is everything in this career. Believe in yourself and your goals so fiercely that the world has no choice but to believe in you too.
What’s a typical day look like for you?
I have two small kids so my VA schedule is part time. I manage my schedule around theirs. This career and the tasks you choose to commit to for clients, makes that possible. My clients tasks are always given my 100%, and my kids have me present and with them every day. That’s what makes this career choice so great, I can do both and be great at both.
What type of tasks do you help clients with?
Social media management, task management in Asana and Trello, image/template creations in Canva, email management, content management/creation and website assistance.
What would you say to anyone thinking of becoming a VA?
There is no better time than right now. You can’t move forward without taking the next best step. Dream big, work hard, and believe in yourself.
